The Argentine looked as though he'd squandered a glorious opportunity when he was given miles of space, but saw his effort bounce off the Valencia 'keeper when he attempted a cheeky chip-shot.

Luckily, the ball fell to Messi's foot for the easy tap-in to an open net.
