If it weren’t for a Pokemon Go player who happened to be nearby, a two-alarm fire in a Sandwich nail salon could have severely damaged the building, officials said.

“He lives in an apartment across the street and he was out playing Pokemon Go,” Sandwich Deputy Fire Chief John Burke said. “While he was outside, he smelled smoke and he heard a pop. He went over to the building and saw charring around the door and smoke coming from the building.”

Burke said more damage could have been done if the player had not noticed that something was wrong.

The fire, which happened shortly after midnight Monday morning, was extinguished within 20 minutes of the fire department’s arrival, Burke said.

Burke said two firefighters suffered minor injuries while fighting the fire. One was taken to Falmouth Hospital for treatment.

One person was displaced from an apartment at the end of the building after firefighters had to cut power during the night, Burke said. The power is being restored Monday and the resident is expected to return home. There was no damage from the fire to the apartment.

Burke said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
