INEC Fixes April 25 For Imo, Taraba Guber Rerun

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed April 25 for the rerun of governorship and state house of assembly elections in Imo and Taraba states.

Imo State resident electoral commissioner, Dr Gabriel Ada, who disclosed this to journalists in Owerri yesterday, said over 200 polling units in 23 local government areas of the state would be involved.

They are areas where election was declared inconclusive by the commission. Election was declared inconclusive in some wards from six local government areas of the state, with the total number of accredited voters put at 145,000.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state had won the majority of seats in the state house of assembly, winning 16, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was left with 5.

In a related issue, the INEC in Taraba State has fixed Saturday, April 25, for the state governorship rerun after the electoral contest was declared inconclusive on Monday.

The head of department, Enlightenment and Publicity, Mr Fabian Reme, who announced this during a briefing at the head office of the commission in Jalingo, said the date had been communicated to all the parties involved.

According to Reme, the governorship rerun became necessary due to irregularities encountered in the April 11 election in the state.

INEC returning officer for the election, Professor Muhammad Kariey, said there had to be a supplementary election because the total number of rejected and cancelled votes was more than the total votes with which the PDP candidate, Darius Ishaku, led the runner-up, Aisha Al-Hassan of the APC.
