Prices of chickens and other poultry products have dropped in Hadejia, Jigawa State, in spite of increasing demand for Christmas and New Year festivities.
A check by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at Hadejia Market at the weekend indicated that prices had decreased by about 20 per cent.
A farm-bred chicken was sold at N1,000 and local variety chicken attracts N1,100 as against its previous price of N1,200 and N1,300 during the same period last season.
Prices of eggs also took a similar hit as a crate now sells for N750 while an egg goes for N25.
NAN reports also that prices of rice and other essential commodities have remained stable in the past few weeks.
A 50 kilogramme bag of rice still goes for between N7,400 and N8,500 depending on the brand, while a four-liter jar of cooking oil is being sold at N1,800.
Dealers at the market attributed the situation to high supply of the commodities from the farms.
Alhaji Haruna Saminu, a dealer, said the chicken prices may further go down in view of the harmattan season.
Saminu said the supply of the products had been higher than the demand hence the drop in prices.
“There is an impressive demand for chickens amid high supply which pushed prices down,” he said.
Mr Philip Audu, a resident, wants traders to reduce the price further down, to enable more families celebrate the festive season in a good mood.
Audu enjoined Nigerians to use the festive season in promoting love and peace.
